Frequently Asked Questions
What the Design Review Committee and what is its role?
The Design Review Committee (DRC) General Bylaw, Section 1.30, approved by Town Meeting in 1982, is intended to balance commercial development interests with preservation of community character and identity. The Design Review Bylaw charges the DRC with reviewing the design of any construction or renovation prokects and all signs within non-residential zoning districts, and making recommendations on their designs to the Director of Inspections The purpose of this process, as stated in the bylaw is:
"To preserve for the citizens of Sturbridge, the natural and architectural qualities and historic assets that the Town has developed throughout the years."
The purpose of the Design Review Committee is to promote safe, functional and attractive development of business and commercial areas; to preserve and enhance the New England character of the Town's commercial centers and thoroughfares as a valid general welfare concern; to unify commercial (and industrial) properties, both visually and physically, with surrounding land uses; to facilitate a more healthful town atmosphere; to protect and preserve the unique and cultural features within the Town; and to protect commercial and residential property values by enhancing the Town's appearance.
It is hoped that over time, as commercial and industrial development continues to seek out opportunities and to advertise and promote its goods and services, the Design Review Committee can help to preserve the Town's streetscape and the inherent qualities of a livable community.
