Assistant Town Clerk
35 hours per week

The Town of Sturbridge is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Assistant Town Clerk.  The position is responsible for skilled administrative support and supervisory work in assisting the Town Clerk to discharge the duties of the office, preparing and managing vital records, voter lists, licenses, street lists & permits and providing various services with the Town Clerk office.  Thorough knowledge of Town Clerk’s operations and office functions is preferred.  Successful candidates will possess excellent verbal, communication, and computer/database skills; and be proficient/extremely accurate in record keeping.  Experience in municipal government or dealing with the public, along with an Associate’s Degree is preferred.  Please visit www.town.sturbridge.ma.us for the job description.

Shall this town approve the Charter Amendments proposed by the Town Meeting Summarized below?
Summary
The December 12, 2016 Special Town Meeting voted unanimously to approve numerous amendments to the Town’s Home Rule Charter. These amendments are primarily intended to clarify certain Charter terms and to make the necessary changes to resolve grammatical errors, capitalization, gender references and consistent naming of town boards and officials.  The amendments also include: adding a definition of “Appropriation”; clarifying the duties and authority of the Moderator, availability of Town Officials at Town Meeting: clarifying the recall election procedures; extending the maximum term of a temporary Town Administrator to nine months; clarifying the suspension or removal of the Town Administrator; and removing Transitional Provisions in Article 9 that no longer serve a purpose.

Poll Workers included: Tim Bardsley, Chris Castendyk, Nancy Castendyk, Joan Chamberland, Maryellen Comerford, Elaine Cook, Pat Jeffries, Chris Knight, Bob Knight, Barbara Mattioli, Kathryn Polizoti, Pat Roy, Bev Spreeman, Ron Stietzel, Chris Wilson, Lucette Favreau, Barbara Stietzel and Assistant Town Clerk Jennifer Sablack. Assistant Town Clerk, Jennifer Sablack, swore the poll workers in and lead them in the Pledge of Allegiance.  She reviewed procedures for inactive voters, provisional ballots and those needing to show ID.       

Order and decorum was efficiently handled by Constable L. David Covino, Robert Cerny & Sturbridge Police Officer Larry Bateman.  The polls opened promptly at 6:30 a.m. and closed at 8:00 p.m.  1123 registered voters came out to cast their vote for a 16%



Also, a reminder that the 2017 Dog Licenses are now available.  Male and female dogs are now $15; altered dogs are now $10.  Current rabies vaccination records are required to license your dog(s).  Applications are available on the Town Clerk’s webpage as well as on the Town Census.  Penalties will be levied after March 31, 2017.

     There is a three day waiting period after filing the marriage intentions before a couple can pick up a marriage license.


Certified copies of Birth, Death and Marriage certificates are available for $10.00 each.
Certified copies can be obtained by visiting the Town Clerk's 0ffice or by sending a written request as to what Vital Record you would like a certified copy of.

2017 Dog Licenses will be available mid January.  Current rabies vaccination records are required to license your dog(s).  Applications are available on the Town Clerk’s webpage as well as on the Town Census.  Mail in licensing is encouraged (please follow directions).

Also, it would be extremely helpful with our record keeping if you would notify the Town Clerk’s office at 508-347-2510 if you no longer have your pet.

Often considered the core of local government, the Town Clerk’s Office serves as the central information point for local residents and citizens at large. The Town Clerk is the keeper of town records, the chief election official, a member of the Board of Registrars, official keeper of the Town Seal, registers all vital events occurring within the community and those events occurring elsewhere to local residents. The Town Clerk records and preserves birth, marriage and death records and provides certified copies of these records upon request.


  


DECLARATION OF HOMESTEAD ACT

Declaration of Homestead Act ($15 fee to execute) each of the following forms can be found in the additional links portion of the Town Clerk's website.These documents are in pdf format and require adobe acrobat reader to view. Once these documents are completed and notarized, they must be filed with the Registry of Deeds.  There is a $35 filing fee (checks should be made payable to the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts) and can be mailed to: Registry of Deeds, 90 Front Street, Worcester, MA  01608.

NOTICE FROM THE STURBRIDGE TOWN CLERK REGARDING FISH/WILDLIFE

Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife has informed the Town Clerk of numerous changes.  Hunting, Fishing, and Sporting licenses will now only be available electronically.  

As Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife are not underwriting the costs of paper, color toner, printers and are insisting on access to our towns’ bank accounts for payments, our office sincerely regrets having to give up this service.

The license buyer may go online to www.mass.gov/masswildlife or contact their office at (617) 626-1590 to obtain a list of local vendors.

We here in the Town Clerks office send out a town census every year. The Federal Census is done every ten years through the Federal Government. These are two different reporting tools. If you have questions pertaining to the Federal Census you may log on to the following website.
