YOU MUST OBTAIN A PERMIT STICKER AT THE TOWN HALL BEFORE YOU MAY USE THE RECYCLING CENTER. THEY ARE AVAILABLE AT THE OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH - Tuesdays & Thursdays 8am - 2pm. You may also send a photocopy of your vehicle registration with a Self-Addressed-Stamped Envelope to: BoH (Recycling sticker), 308 Main Street, Sturbridge, MA 01566.
VEHICLES WITHOUT VALID STICKERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED INTO THE FACILITY, PER ORDER OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH.
Trash that cannot be recycled must be bagged in clear or translucent bags and have your permit number on the outside. No black or brown bags!
Bags are subject to inspection. Many communities have adopted a “dollar per bag” fee in order to encourage separation of wastes.
In Sturbridge, there is no fee for most household waste, so we must rely on the cooperation of everyone who uses the Recycling Center.
The following items must be removed from your trash.
CANS
Soup cans, food cans, etc. (not aluminum cans) must be rinsed and flattened, with paper removed. Aerosol (spray) cans must be placed in the appropriate barrel.
GLASS
Clean and separate into clear or brown & green.
Caps, foil & metal rings must be removed. Window glass goes in a separate bin. Drinking glasses, ceramics and mirrors go in the trash compactor.
PAPER
Please sort as follows:
Mixed paper goes in one roll-off. Mixed paper includes magazines, catalogs, school papers, cereal boxes and similar paperboard boxes. Newspaper goes in a roll-off next to the mixed paper. Corrugated paper goes in the baler. All paper must be dry & clean. No plastic. No milk cartons. No box liners. No dirty tissues or paper towels. No string. No Christmas wrap.
When you throw paper bags into the roll-offs, please be careful that they contain paper only.
PLASTIC
Plastics are sorted into 3 separate roll-offs because of the requirements of the company that picks up the material. It is important that no metal be included, and that the plastic is rinsed clean.
Roll-off #1—MILK JUGS (also cider, water and juice jugs). NO HOOD MILK JUGS.
Roll-off #2—Plastics numbered #1 & #2 only. Bottom of container must be larger than the top. No toys. No flowerpots or trays.
Roll-off #3—All other plastic, including Hood jugs. This material can be difficult to dispose of. It takes up a lot of space in the landfill, and it is difficult to recycle and transport.
POLYSTYRENE FOAM (“Styrofoam”)
There is one bin for FOOD PACKAGING and another for NON-FOOD PACKAGING (“plastic peanuts”). Plastic must be clean.
METALS
ALUMINUM—This includes aluminum cans, some lawn furniture, window frames, doors, etc. To check if it is aluminum, remember that a magnet will not stick to aluminum.
REMOVE ALL GLASS & PLASTIC
If you have questions, please ask.
OTHER METAL—Steel, copper, brass, etc. Wire under 4 foot lengths, or tightly bundled. Mufflers, catalytic converters, tailpipes, pipe, bikes, lawnmowers (drained of all fluids).
YARD WASTE
Leaves, grass, branches under 4’ lengths and 3” diameter. NO PLASTIC BAGS. This material will be composted or chipped for mulch.
CLOTHING
Clean, usable clothing can be placed in the Salvation Army containers at the Recycling Center.
TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT
Items, which you really think someone else will want can be left in the Take It or Leave It shed.
No junk please! Pickers will be banned from using the facility! For personal use only.
BATTERIES
Dry cell (flashlight) batteries should not be included with regular trash. There is a bin for them. There is also a bucket for NI-CAD batteries. Both are located near the automobile battery container.
