The charter members of the Friends of the Sturbridge/Fiskdale Seniors envisioned an organization of “givers” whosed teamwork would enhance the dignity and well-being of Sturbridge seniors. For 26 years, the Friends have fulfilled this commitment, addressed mutual concerns, and have nurtured friendships.
The Friends meet at 1:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month (September to June). New members are introduced. Reports from staff members keep us up-to-date on programs and services for seniors. After business is discussed we enjoy raffles, door prizes, entertainment, refreshments, and socializing. The Annual Luncheon held in June is always a gala event.
The Friends are willing volunteers. They assist at the Nutrition Site as kitchen helpers and meals-on-wheels drivers. They perform a variety of clerical duties. They offer their handyman skills for small repairs and building upkeep. They serve as assistants for many activities at the Center.
The Friends show community interest throughout the year. Scholarships of $500.00 each are awarded annually to two high school seniors. Members donate food items to fill holiday baskets for our low-income neighbors. Our donation to the American Cancer Society provides the golden daffodils that brighten the Center each spring.
As a private, non-profit association, the Friends can act as a fundraiser to underwrite items not covered by government funding. The Dreiends donatd the attractive drapes, dining tables, and chairs that furnish the renovated Center. When the pool table needed a new cover, the Friends gave $200.00 for labor. Some triend-and-true fundraisers are bake sales, yard, raffles, etc.
As with most organizations, membership donations are the greatest source of funding. We invite you to help us raise funds and to help you have fun. Join the over 300 members of the Friends. Send in your donation soon or take it to the Senior Center at 480 Main Street in Fiskdale and introduce yourself.
